Holland’s New Ice Park: A Winter Amenity That Brings the Community Together

One of the things that makes Holland such a special place to live is the way our city continues to invest in thoughtful, people-centered spaces. The opening of the Holland Ice Park is a great example of that commitment—and a welcome addition to downtown, especially during the winter months.

Located in the heart of downtown Holland, the Ice Park offers public skating and dedicated curling lanes, creating a space that’s as much about connection as it is about recreation. Whether you’re lacing up skates, trying curling for the first time, or simply enjoying the atmosphere from the sidelines, it’s designed to be accessible and inviting for all ages.

How the Ice Park Came to Be

The Holland Ice Park was made possible through a combination of private philanthropy, public investment, and community partnership.

The project began with a $1.16 million gift from local retired educator Frank Kraai, whose vision helped launch the idea of a community ice-skating facility in Holland. That vision was later strengthened by a $1 million donation from the Jim Jurries Family, given in recognition of the impact Holland has had on their family and inspired by a shared belief in creating spaces that foster community connection.

In addition to these major private gifts, the City of Holland approved the project as part of its long-term parks and recreation planning, partnered with the Downtown Development Authority, and worked with the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area to support broader fundraising efforts. Together, these contributions helped move the Ice Park from vision to reality as a lasting community amenity.

Why Amenities Like This Matter

From a lifestyle perspective, investments like the Ice Park help make winter feel more engaging and connected. From a real estate standpoint, they quietly shape the long-term appeal of a community. Walkable downtown amenities, recreational opportunities, and well-maintained public spaces all contribute to why people choose to live here—and why they stay. These are the kinds of features that don’t always show up on a listing sheet, but they absolutely influence quality of life.

Planning a Visit

The Ice Park is open seasonally, with skating sessions, curling opportunities, and special events throughout the winter. If you haven’t been yet, it’s worth stopping by—whether you’re participating or just soaking in the energy downtown. You can find current hours, pricing, and updates through Downtown Holland’s website.

A City Worth Investing In

Holland continues to prove that small cities can think big when it comes to livability. The Ice Park is just one more reminder of how fortunate we are to call this place home.
